First get to level 20. You really can't make a lot of money as a level 16.

Second, make a budget. Why are you broke? Even a level 16 should have some cash stored away. Look at what you are spending all your gold on and ask if you really need it or is it just junk. Next determine what you really need to buy and start saving for it.

Write down your goals and how much each will likely cost. Then set a minimum goal for your storage bank. That goal might be 10k or maybe even only 5k. Determine that you will not spend 1g on anything other than pure necessities until your storage has that amount in it and determine that you storage will never drop below that amount except for emergencies when you need the cash.

When questing, pick up all your drops even the crappy white ones. The merchant will pay decent money for those and you'll be surprised how much they add up. You won't get super rich off white drops, but you will get enough to buy everything you need. (Not everything you want, just what you need)

your biggest goal should be finishing what ever campaign you own to get access to HM. Once you start playing in HM and vanquishing you should not have money woes anymore, even without farming.

Take advantage of special weekends.

Recently there was a weekend event that dropped fireworks. On that weekend, they were selling for a minimum of 200g (though they'll only go for 100g-125g or there abouts now). Killing low level monsters is just as time efficient as the big ones, so go on killing sprees. As you learn to farm you'll find good spots for your profession of choice and the campaign(s) you own.

I Was able to make 500k that weekend, and I don't usually farm. I just go nuts during weekends like that. There will probably be one at the end of this month for GW's birthday, though don't hold your breath. Don't expect to pull in 500k but it should get you a nice little amount so you don't have to worry about day-to-day expenses, which at your level / experience is all you need to be worrying about

Farming these events + questing, missioning and doing Hard Mode things is usually my form of income these days and that leaves me pretty comfortable.

To unlock Hard Mode (HM) you just need to finish the last mission of a campaign (prophs, factions, nightfall) and on the Party Window there will be an option to switch modes. Then, all your level 20s can access HM!

This is sound advice. With my first character I outfitted him with collector items instead of buying things from other players. I'm not sure what campaign you are playing but areas you get to once you are lvl 20 will have max stat weapons, armor, and offhands. Use those items first as you are saving up your money.
Another tip related to picking up all the white drops is again after lvl 20, if you identify those items with a regular ID kit that also slightly increases your profits. Most items gain far more resell value than the 4 gold it costs to identify them. It does help, but only at the higher level areas. The Crystal Desert and on in Prophecies is an example.
The very large amounts of money come from trading with other players mostly. However, players only want perfect mod and rare skins on items generally. Do some searches thru the Sell or High End Sell forums to see what things are sold to other players.
This is all after lvl 20 pretty much though, so as mentioned, finish your campaign first.
GL and HF.

Farming in HM depends on what you are going for, the special event farms are done in NM for speed, as things die quicker in NM. Kill more things quickly, get more special items quickly. There are HM farms for gold items and other things. But most farming by the masses now would be raptor farming on NM during special events.

The problem with being new is you start with very little. Some things to take into account at this point. Function over fashion. Don't waste your plat on looking "cool" in this game max is max looks are just for that.

Eh, only 2 viewing now.

I'm gonna disagree with your quote above. I play this game to have fun. There are a lot of ways to make money in this game but overall your main objective should be to have fun. Farming is boring to me but a lot of folks enjoy it. Just do what you enjoy most and you'll find that you can probably earn gold from it.

- Just go thru the storylines. Finish all the quests and missions. You'll earn a decent living.

- Farming. If you're good you can make a lot of gold this way. If you're not good it can be frustrating.

- Power Trading. High end power trading is where the real money is. You can make millions here, but it's not for beginners. You need a firm understanding of the market and that will take a lot of experience.

- Running. No matter where you go in this game there will be someone there that wants to be someplace else. If you can run him there you can earn money. Again, this isn't for beginners. Also if you want to get better at the game, I'd recommend never accepting a run. You have to pay the runner and it's money that you don't need to spend. If you can't finish a mission on your own, then read wiki and learn how to do it. You'll improve your skills and save your cash.

First of all, ask yourself why do you need hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Covah also has a good point. I'm rich as hell, but I've been playing the game for 3 years. You have had it for... what a month? Take it slow and easy. You will get money in time. There is no reason to rush.

Also, there is an edit button for posts. Secondly, I make decent money by vanquishing areas in hardmode ja eotn dungeons.
